Intravitreal Injections can save your eyesight
It is very important to emphasize that the effectiveness of intraocular injections depends mainly on timely diagnosis and treatment. As well as early treatment, it is also very important to continue close monitoring by a retinal ophthalmologist who is assisted by an OCT examination of the retina.
Medications injected directly into the vitreous cavity, can prevent blindness resulting from common retinal diseases such as AMD (Age related Macular Degeneration), diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion. The main drugs used for intraocular injection for these diseases are Anti-VEGF. In case of daibetic retinopathy or retinal vein blockage, steroids can also be intraocularly injected.
The process of intraocular injections
- The patient lies on the treatment bed in the clinic.
- The eye is anesthetized by anesthetic drops.
- The eye and eyelids are cleaned with a disinfectant (usually polydine) to create a sterile area.
- The face is covered except for the eye.
- A speculum is placed over the eye, in order to keep it open.
- After further disinfection of the injection site in the conjunctiva (the white part around the cornea) the drug will be injected into the eye.
The injection procedure should be repeated once a month or as decided by the doctor depending on the condition of the retina.
The volume of the injected drug is as small as a drop of water and the intraocular injection is performed with an extrimly thin needle, so that the pain is unnoticeable to mild, at most. The day after the intraocular injection, there may be a burning sensation in the eye, which can be treated by using artificial tears.
